CNC operator jobs, or computer numerically controlled machines, involves the creation of precision crafted parts that are used in the automobile, aircraft, and machine manufacturing processes. CNC machines read computer code to determine how the part should be crafted and formed from a solid block of metal or plastic. These types of machines utilize machining tools like laser cutting machines, spindles, multi axis, and milling machines as a part of the crafting process.

The qualifications and education necessary to gain a CNC operator career relies on the industry type and the employer. Skills learned from vocational, secondary, or post secondary training would be an excellent foundation for an entry level professional.

Supplementary skills learned from community or technical colleges, would also be beneficial but only a basic knowledge of computers with experience in electronics is necessary. An individual with previous experience working as a programmer or machine operator will have a sizable advantage over the competition for a position. CNC programmers will also be updated through employer initiated training programs that will go over the revisions and updates applied to the machine's system as new techniques and procedures are introduced. The National Institute of Metalworking Skills has developed national standards for metalworkers that are being set in place by many training facilities and colleges.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2006 there were 158,000 jobs held by CNC operators. In 2006 there were 141,000 metal and plastics workers and computer controlled machine tool operators. CNC job opportunities are expected to remain consistent despite a less than favorable employment outlook.
